Alternative packing supplies for your NJ relocation

Before you pack for a relocation, you’ll need to gather some packing supplies. The easiest way to do so is to contact your movers NJ and ask them for everything you need. But if you want to save money or try going green, then you might need to be a bit more creative. Luckily there are all sorts of alternative packing supplies you can use for your NJ relocation. From plastic containers to newspapers to fabric, there are tons of things you can use instead of or in addition to moving boxes and packing peanuts. Some of them may even serve you better than regular old packing supplies!

Alternative packing supplies to use instead of boxes

When you start thinking about your move, odds are that one of your first thoughts will be about moving boxes. That’s the image we all have in our heads when it comes to relocation: endless cardboard boxes filling our home. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Although movers Fairfield NJ do tend to use cardboard boxes more than anything else, there are alternatives out there.

Plastic containers

One of the most popular alternatives to moving boxes are plastic moving containers. Even some professional packers NJ use them! So if you’re interested in this alternative, ask your moving company if they supply plastic containers. Why are plastic containers so popular? They’re very durable, waterproof, excellent for both transportation and storage, and they are sustainable as they can be made from recycled plastic and recycled after use.

Bags and suitcases

A great way to pack without spending any money on packing supplies is to use what you already have lying around the house. If you’re someone who travels, goes to the gym a lot or even just likes to be fashionable, you probably have some bags lying around the house. From suitcases to duffels to totes to purses, you can fill any canvas or fabric bag just as easily as a moving box.

Plastic bags

Although not always the perfect alternative packing supplies solution, plastic bags can be useful during a move. Resealable baggies are excellent for small items that you can’t afford to lose like screws, tools, and valuables. Drag a clean garbage bag over the clothes hanging in your closet and you have a quick and easy solution for packing your wardrobe. You won’t be able to pull the same trick on things like electronics or furniture. But some things can easily be packed in just a regular old plastic bag.

Bins, baskets, buckets

The things you use for storing and carrying your belongings around the house can usually double as packing supplies too. Fill up your hampers, bins, baskets, buckets, crates, drawers and other little storage containers with the things you’re moving and use them instead of boxes. However, be careful with this when moving long distance. If you cannot seal or cover your makeshift container or if you don’t think it can withstand a long trip, skip using it for a long distance move.

Alternative packing supplies to use instead of cushioning

Your personal belongings aren’t the only thing that goes into moving boxes during relocation. You must also use cushioning and protective material to prevent damage to your belongings. This is usually bubble pack or packing peanuts and occasionally packing paper. But there are alternatives to those.

In most cases, you can replace packing paper with regular paper. Use old newspapers or magazines, spam mail, torn up notebook pages, even wrapping paper. Depending on the kind of paper you’re using, it can be good for wrapping things or it can be shredded and crumpled to make for cushioning in a box. However, be careful with printed and colored paper. Don’t use it on china, art or valuables. The ink might transfer and stain your belongings.

Another very simple solution to replacing cushioning materials is fabric. Old blankets, sheets, even torn up clothes can be used for wrapping things, filling empty space in boxes and even tying things down. If you sew or knit, you can even use fabric scraps or yarn for this. However, we recommend only cutting up or tearing your clothes if you absolutely have to. Otherwise, donate them! Someone else might use them even if you don’t.

Alternative packing supplies that are good for the environment

Moving isn’t the greenest thing you’ll be doing in your life. After all, you’ll spend a lot of energy and fuel on it. But there are ways to reduce the carbon footprint of your relocation. One of them is to use eco-friendly packing supplies.

Natural materials

Green packing supplies are quickly becoming all the rage in the moving industry. So some moving supplies do provide these alternatives. If you’re interested in going green, talk to your movers – they might be able to help you. Bamboo boxes and fabric, sugarcane, algae and seaweed-based materials, mushrooms and even corn have been used in moving. For a DIY version of this, pop some popcorn and use it instead of packing peanuts.

Recycled or recyclable materials

Recycling is the easiest way to turn your packing supplies green. You can easily find moving boxes and plastic containers made from recycled cardboard and plastic. Most of the paper you’d need for moving can also be made from recycled materials. Finally, once you’re done with your supplies, you can find a recycling center near you and drop them off for recycling to complete the circle.

Save money with alternative packing supplies

There are many reasons why you might opt for alternative packing supplies. Perhaps you’re in a hurry and don’t have the time to look for supplies so you’re only using what you already have around the house. Or maybe you’re trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible. But one of the biggest reasons to look into alternatives to moving boxes is to save money on your relocation. Most alternatives to moving supplies are all about upcycling – using something you already own in a new and creative way. So don’t be afraid to think outside of the box!
